Behind the Pages

Planner Perfect came out of a progression of many planners. Even though my mom was and still is a life planner, she didn’t actually sit me down and teach me how to be one. She had always used a spiral bound notebook to harness and plan all of her goals and dreams and I could feel the residual of her successes by simply having a mother who planned.

When I was just starting out as an adult, these residuals gave me everything it took to be a life planner. I wanted to emulate her and give the notebook a try, too, but found out after a year of using a spiral notebook that it was not the one for me. So, needless to say, I was very excited to go and find for myself a beautiful traditional planner that had my name written all over it! After skipping off to a variety of different stores I finally found and purchased, what I thought, was just the one for me. It was a fairly large size, had a calendar and “to-do” list pages; zippered around to close and last but not least, it possessed the sweet smell of vinyl. With a giant smile on my face, I left feeling euphoric like I had just gained a new friend. Off we went to go and plan together; only over time, I found that it was a one sided relationship.

I did all the planning and my new planner friend just sat there overly crammed and useless, I was left feeling discouraged. None of them seemed to work for me because all my goals and plans for my life couldn’t fit into the tiny squares of the planner’s calendar and task pages. But, I didn’t give up just yet, I experimented with different ones thinking that maybe if it’s cover was of sassy tartan or if it was larger and made with genuine leather it would somehow suit my needs better. I went through them like my obsession for new purses except the planners continually left me disappointed.

This planner roller coaster ride took years before I realized that I was simply not going to be able to be an effective life planner with a traditional, task manager. I had to go back to my roots. My mother, as you remember, simply used a spiral bound notebook and was a very effective life planner. That was the secret, it was the paper, the paper to write the script of your life. Simply genius! This is when the light bulb went off and realized that when you author your own life, you’re dreaming and actively planning what you want your life to look like on those crisp white pages of your planner. I couldn’t wait to get started! So, since I wanted something different than the notebook, I set to work designing my own planner while still using the same concept as my mother’s. It didn’t take me very long to design it, but it did take me awhile to perfect it into what it is for me today. After being asked how I seem to do it all and do it well, decided that Planner Perfect should not just be kept for myself and I set work to create and design my own planner for every woman to use.

My planner is a woman’s dream and I go to it every morning with my cup of coffee. This time, it’s not one-sided. I fill in the planner’s pages of what I want my life to look like and my planner obliges me with the steps it takes to get it done and live out my goals. No longer is my planner crammed and resentful with my life in the tiny calendar’s square—it’s so simple that it’s simply Planner Perfect.

Here I am with my oldest son, Taylor. We were on a camping trip in South Dakota in 2007 with the rest of our family. I live in Papillion Nebraska with my husband, John, where we own a lawn and landscape company, Penton Enterprises, and homeschool our seven children.

I love writing articles on our experiences of homeschooling and you can check it out on my blog.
